Not surprisingly Willa Cather's novel of the Great War, (1922), did not fare very well in Cooperman's analysis: the story of Claude Wheeler, a thwarted romantic who discovers in war the "something splendid" previously lacking in his life as a Nebraska farmer, hardly fits into the pattern of disenchantment that Cooperman located at the heart of American First World War literature.
