He tested the hypothesis that cumulative oxygen, represented as concentration and duration of oxygen exposure (i.e. "oxygen area under the curve"), can be used to define levels of oxygen toxicity sufficient to impair host response to viral infection in mice - funded by NIH T32 Department of Pediatrics grant, "Bench to Bedside to Curbside." He was Director of Michigan State University’s Pediatric Residency Program at Sparrow Hospital and Director of Clinical Genetics at Michigan State University.

When only higher-quality studies were included, the findings were consistent (VLBW aOR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.33–1.92; <32 weeks’ gestation aOR, 1.42; 95% CI, 1.06–1.88; ELBW aOR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.31–2.36). The Division of Neonatology provides in-patient intensive care, consultative support and neonatal transport services for critically ill infants in Tennessee and beyond. Theophylline for renal function in term neonates with perinatal asphyxia: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Prediction of acute renal failure after birth asphyxia. A team or persons trained in neonatal resuscitation should be promptly available at all deliveries to provide complete resuscitation, including endotracheal intubation and administration of medications. Currently, we have results at 18 months follow up from three major trials, which includes CoolCap Trial (selective head cooling), NICHD Whole body cooling trial and TOBY Trial (whole body cooling).9,16,19 In a meta-analysis reviewing these three trials, it was noted that moderate hypothermia results in decreased mortality and morbidity rates.8 A Cochrane review of eight cooling trials also noted a decrease in mortality and morbidity as well as a reduction in neurodevelopmental disability.

This year, we will be accepting abstracts describing quality improvement projects. For a 3 kg newborn infant, using D5W would result in an IV rate of 25 ml/hr, which results in 600 ml/day, or 200 cc/kg/day, which is too much. Funding for additional graduate coursework is not guaranteed, but may be available on an individual basis, pending approval by Dr. Brian Carter is a neonatologist who received his medical degree from the University Of Tennessee College of Medicine, completed his pediatric residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado and his neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado.
