Many science fiction stories contain similar themes and ideas, but only two really caught my attention. As with steampunk, it portrays advanced technology based on pre-modern designs, but rather than the steam power of the Industrial Age, the technology used is based on springs, clockwork and similar. The grumbling is aimed at literary fiction set in the past, which is accused of being, by its nature, escapist. This branch of literature has been around for some time, so there's a substantial history to discuss.
